Overview

The Machangulo Nature Reserve is on a peninsula due East of Maputo, which is the capital and the base for the main international airport of Mozambique. The peninsular is bordered on the East by the Indian Ocean and Maputo Bay on the West. On the South of the Machangulo Nature Reserve is the Maputo Special Elephant Reserve, a beautiful nature reserves with elephants, buffalo and magnificent inland lakes with hippos and thousands of flamingos. The peninsula is separated from Inhaca Island by a short sea gap “Hell’s Gate”.  The beaches are 16 km long with only a dozen of private villas. As a result, one can walk on the beaches for hours without seeing another human being. The peninsula has beautiful coastal riverine bush behind the beach, with abundant birdlife and some small game. Inland it has magnificent lakes, some of them fresh water and some sea water.
